Nutrition During Pregnancy
Nutrition is very important when you are pregnant because you are the sole source of nutrition for your baby. If you eat a well-balanced diet during pregnancy, your baby's body, brain, and other organs benefit.
FOLATE OR FOLIC ACID
Folate is a B vitamin that helps prevent some birth defects, such as spina bifida. You can get Folate by eating plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, and by taking a prenatal vitamin.
IRON IN PREGNANCY
Iron is very important during pregnancy. You need more than double the normal amount of iron when you are pregnant. As your baby grows, your body makes more blood. You can easily become anemic (low blood) if you don't take in adequate amounts through food. Foods high in iron are meats (especially liver), dried beans and peas, dark greens, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Your prenatal vitamins supply iron as well. Make sure to limit iron blockers, which include powdered drink mixes, soda, tea and coffee.
