Vitamins & Medications

DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT

The most important step to take once you have had a positive test is to schedule an appointment with a medical professional who cares for pregnant women, such as an obstetrician or midwife. We recommend you see a doctor before your 12th week of pregnancy.

VITAMINS

A pack of prenatal vitamins has been given to you today. Take one vitamin per day with food until they are gone.

MEDICATIONS

Do not take any medications (prescription or over-the-counter) without checking with a doctor or pharmacist first. If you currently take any medications prescribed by a doctor, call that doctor right away (today) to make sure it is safe in pregnancy. Many over-the-counter medications or herbal supplements may not be safe. Therefore, check with a doctor or pharmacist about them as well.

The following medications are considered safe for use during pregnancy:

For headaches, general body aches or fever: Tylenol or other acetaminophen products.

For heartburn or indigestion: Maalox, Mylanta, Riopan, Rolaids, Tums, or Pepcid AC.

For constipation: Surfax, Colace, FiberCon, Citrucel, Metamucil, and Senokot. Stool softeners may be taken if needed.

For diarrhea: Imodium or Kaopectate.

For hemorrhoids: Preparation H, Tucks, Anusol, HC, and Proctofoam.

For vaginal yeast infections: Monistat, Mycelex, Genelotrimin.

For trouble sleeping: Benadryl, Tylenol PM (after 12 weeks of pregnancy).

Do not use Aspirin, Nuprin, Aleve, Advil, or products containing aspirin or ibuprofen. Do not use laxatives.
