The Story of Progesterone

Progesterone was identified in 1929 by American physician George W. Corner, and by the 2010s it was widely used to prevent threatened miscarriage. Its history as a trusted ally of healthy pregnancy did not stop there. Research confirmed that progesterone became the best and safest method of providing support during the luteal phase in assisted reproductive technology (ART) — the term used for fertility treatments such as invitro fertilization (IVF). In other words, this is the same natural hormone that helps hopeful mothers around the world bring their babies safely into the world through modern fertility medicine.¹  

Since progesterone is the main hormone in the luteal phase of a woman's cycle. It plays a key role in preparing the uterus for a possible pregnancy and in maintaining it after it has occurred. Its role is not synthetic or artificial — it is bioidentical to what a woman's own body produces naturally to sustain new life.²  

How Does Mifepristone Work — and How Can Progesterone Counter It?

The first pill in a medication abortion is mifepristone. Mifepristone acts as a progesterone receptor blocker, cutting off the natural hormonal signal a developing baby needs to survive. This is where Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) steps in. The reversal protocol is based on a straightforward principle: if mifepristone works by blocking progesterone receptors, administering supplemental progesterone quickly enough might outcompete the drug and allow the pregnancy to continue.³  

What Does the Research Show?

The pioneer of the APR protocol is Dr. George Delgado, a physician who first used the treatment in 2009. In 2018, Dr. Delgado published a peer-reviewed study in the medical journal Issues in Law and Medicine, following 754 women who wanted to stop their in-progress medication abortions. Working alongside obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Mary Davenport and five other scholars, Dr. Delgado demonstrated that when progesterone was administered within 72 hours of taking mifepristone, the APR protocol had a 64–68% success rate. The study also found zero increased risk of birth defects or preterm births.⁴  

Progesterone is bioidentical to the hormone a woman's body naturally produces to sustain pregnancy, and it has been safely used with pregnant women and their babies since the 1950s. A 1999 FDA review likewise found no increased risk of birth defects in pregnant women taking progesterone.⁵
